Honoring a Lifetime of Ministry: Pastor Harvey Gil’s Legacy

“We always had Superbowl parties because my theory is if you cannot invite your friends to a Superbowl party how in the world will you invite them to an evangelistic series?” Pastor Harvey Gil has always had a practical application to ministry. After 35 remarkable years of ministry, Pastor Harvey is embarking on a new chapter in life. Although officially retired, his passion for serving others remains unwavering, and he plans to continue his God-given mission with the same dedication that has defined his life.

Pastor Harvey’s paid ministry spans 35 years all in the Southwestern Union, 25 of which were spent serving communities in Oklahoma. Prior to his time in Oklahoma, he worked as Youth Director for the Texico Conference—a challenging yet rewarding role. He enjoyed four years leading summer camp at Camp Rio Grande. While serving as youth director  he pastored two churches, showcasing his incredible ability for multitasking and leadership. Before entering Adventist Ministry, he served as the Chaplain for the Chicago White Sox Baseball Team.

Throughout his career, Pastor Harvey found his passion in program development and small group encounters. From orchestrating the annual 50-piece “Festival of Lights” Christmas concert in Claremore, and organizing the annual Camp Meeting Orchestra, to fostering meaningful connections through Bible studies and outdoor church gatherings, he found joy in creating vibrant spaces for spiritual and musical expression. His calling extended beyond worship activities, as he became a trusted confidant and encourager to fellow pastors, providing guidance and support with wisdom and warmth.Dominick Alipoon, Bartlesville District Pastor recalls that Pastor Harvey “never let the generational gap deter him from speaking life into the younger pastors. I always felt my conversations with pastor Harvey left me supported and encouraged for ministry.”

Among his favorite memories is the story from when he was pastoring in Claremore. He woke up one morning to find his home “flamingled” by the local youth and their families. There were about one hundred, handmade flamingos covering his yard, floating in his pool, and even stuck to his windshield. “My worthless dog didn’t say a thing!” he laughs. To feel comfortable enough to pull pranks on your pastor says a whole lot about the deep relationships he has built through the years.

At home, Pastor Harvey is a relaxed and down-to-earth individual, having enjoyed the thrills of driving his 1968 Porsche—a midlife crisis car that carried moral compass vibes. Selling it later to fund his son's first year of college, Harvey jokes that his son still owes him a Porsche, but also said it was the best investment he could have made.

Described as diligent and approachable, Pastor Harvey lived out the Jesus Method of evangelism: “Belonging, believing, and becoming,in that order!” As a beloved figure among the youth and pastors, he continues to carry the message of grace and guidance even into retirement. Every morning, Pastor Harvey starts the day writing on his book for young pastors that give them the tools they need to thrive in ministry. “It’s a book I wish I had when I started out.”

He notes that this journey wouldn’t have been possible without the support of exceptional individuals like Dr. and Mrs. Dwight Korgan, whose affirmations and encouragement have left a lasting impact. Elder Rodney Grove, a former conference president, also played a significant role in understanding and supporting Pastor Harvey’s heart for ministry. Mike Rogers was a kindred spirit and fellow musician who’s support “I can’t even put into words!” And most importantly, he recognizes his queen, Corinne Gil. “She's my lover, my private confidant, she's the one who gives me wisdom, she's the one who has sleepless nights because of me, she’s my steadfast partner, and my best friend. I couldn't have done it without her by my side.”

Retirement marks the beginning of a new chapter filled with travel, book writing, and musical compositions. His heart remains dedicated to serving the Lord and staying close to family as he plans to visit his “grands” often. Pastor Harvey’s example of letting your light so shine has been his lifelong journey. We wish God’s peace to cover you as you continue to follow God’s calling on your life, Pastor Harvey! Congratulations on retirement!
